The transfer of 210Po and 210Pb in the food web of small pelagic fishes (from phytoplankton and zooplankton to anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus and sardine Sardina pilchardus) is investigated in the Gulf of Lion (GoL). We present original data of 210Po and 210Pb activity concentrations, C and N stable isotope ratios, measured (i) from different size classes of phytoplankton and zooplankton during spring and winter in different environments of the GoL, and (ii) in two fish species. A Bibliometric Analysis of Microalgae Research in the World, Europe, and the European Atlantic Area ArchiMer

A bibliographic database of scientific papers published by authors affiliated worldwide, especially focused in Europe and in the European Atlantic Area, and containing the keywords “microalga(e)” or “phytoplankton” was built. A corpus of 79,020 publications was obtained and analyzed using the Orbit Intellixir software to highlight the evolution of the research domain. Publication rates from 1960 to 2019, organization of the research, collaboration networks between countries and organizations, emerging and fading research concepts, major studied species, and associated concepts, as well as journals publishing microalgae research were considered. To better understand the effect of Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PSTs) accumulation in the digestive gland of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, we experimentally exposed individual oysters for 48 h to a PSTs producer, the dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella. In comparison to the effect of the non-toxic Alexandrium tamarense, on the eight apoptotic related genes tested, Bax and BI.1 were significantly upregulated in oysters exposed 48 h to A. catenella. Plankton are the base of marine food webs, essential to sustaining fisheries and other marine life. Continuous Plankton Recorders (CPRs) have sampled plankton for decades in both hemispheres and several regional seas. CPR research has been integral to advancing understanding of plankton dynamics and informing policy and management decisions. We describe how the CPR can contribute to global plankton diversity monitoring, being cost-effective over large scales and providing taxonomically resolved data. A non-linear software sensor to monitor the internal nitrogen quota of phytoplanktonic cells ArchiMer

New techniques - called software sensors - issued from the non-linear automatic control field and initially developed for non-linear chemical systems have been applied to a continuous culture of phytoplankton. A software sensor (or 'observer') combines an analytical differential equation based model and partial measurements of the system in order to estimate the non-measured state variables. It filters data and estimates the actual state of living systems, models of which are often rough approximations. To understand the hydrological and limnological conditions during the annual regime of high and low river flow, as well as the action of the tides, a series of 18 collecting trips were conducted in monthly and bimonthly intervals across the Bay of Marajó during the years 1983-1985. The Tocantins River provides more than 80% of the inflow into this bay and shows a much greater difference in water volume flow between high and low water season than the Amazon. The annual displacement of brackish water influence is thus more extensive Marajó Bay than in the Amazon estuary. The Droop model allows to represent microalgae growth limited by a nutrient, using a cell quota (also referred to as variable-yield) approach. Single-cell measurements have revealed quota heterogeneity in phytoplankton collected from field studies. Such heterogeneity can be due, among other factors, to spatial structure (e.g. in biogeochemical cycles in the ocean, or for photobioreactors connected in series). A fully-coupled biological-physical-chemical model of a coastal ecosystem was constructed to examine the impact of suspended mussel culture on phytoplankton biomass in Tracadie Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Due to the extent of mussel culture there, we hypothesised that shellfish filtration would control the concentration and distribution of phytoplankton and other suspended particles in the bay. During the spring (H-04/82: october 11-27, 1982)carried out by the Fishery Research Vessel "Dr.E.Holmberg", the distribution of temperature, salinity, nutrients concentration and photosynthetic pigments were studied at the "Rio de la Plata" maritime front. The presence of Sub-Tropical coastal waters in only station did not allow its characterization. Low Chlorophyll a concentration were noted, in association with scarce concentrations of nutrients and high Margalef index values.

An Improved Protocol for Flow Cytometry Analysis of Phytoplankton Cultures and Natural Samples ArchiMer

Preservation of cells, choice of fixative, storage, and thawing conditions are recurrent issues for the analysis of phytoplankton by flow cytometry. We examined the effects of addition of the surfactant Pluronic F68 to glutaraldehyde-fixed photosynthetic organisms in cultures and natural samples. In particular, we examined cell losses and modifications of side scatter (a proxy of cell size) and fluorescence of natural pigments. We found that different marine phytoplankton species react differently to the action of Pluronic F68. In particular, photosynthetic prokaryotes are less sensitive than eukaryotes. Le long des côtes du golfe de Gabès, les données collectées dans le cadre du Réseau de Surveillance du Phytoplancton et des Phycotoxines (REPHY), constituent une base pertinente pour examiner la structure et la dynamique des communautés phytoplanctoniques à grandes échelles temporelle (1997-2007) et géographique (l’ensemble de littoral du golfe).
